“ART – do we disregard the oncological impact?”

The conference “ART – do we disregard the oncological impact?” took place in Kempten (Germany) on 4 February 2011. Jaroslav Lakutin, gynaecologist of AVA clinic, took part in this conference. The issued on the impact of female sex hormones on the incidence of various kinds of cancer were discussed at the conference. The conference provided an overview on interaction of endometriosis and ovarian cancer.

The patients had an increased risk of some types of ovarian cancer in case of endometriosis in the case history. Several reports were dedicated to the impact of infertility drugs (including the ones used for artificial insemination) on the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The represented data show that in case of IVF the risk of breast cancer is not increased in the patients who received Clomifen and gonadotropic hormone therapy. However the higher risk is found in the patients over 40 years suffering from hormonal infertility or those who received the stimulation more than 4 times.

The participants of the conference discussed the drug impact on the incidence of congenital diseases in babies born after artificial fertilization. The absence of increased risk of congenital diseases in babies born after artificial fertilization was reported with certainty at the conference. Recent studies do not indicate any risk of IVF procedure for the baby’s health.A particular block of reports was dedicated to fertility preservation (ability to conceive and deliver a baby) in cancer patients.

Different ways to help cancer patients treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy were discussed at the conference. The results obtained from practical application of some techniques of fertility preservation were presented: GnRH agonists, embryo and egg vitrification. The results of the conference attendance give the hope to deliver a baby even to cancer patients. However each case of such treatment should be solved individually with cooperation of gynaecologist-reproductologist, oncologist, chemotherapist and embryologist.
